The Royal Palace was built in 1825-1848, and currently serves as the residence of the reigning king Harold V. Over the building, consisting of 173 rooms, decorated with gold fluttering standard of the monarch or the flag of the crown Prince, if the President is away.
The entrance to the Palace itself is only open for organized tours with a guide in the period from 20 July to 15 August. However, everyone is welcome to sit on the steps, walk around the Palace square to watch the changing of the guard and the Royal guardsmen in bowler hats with bunch of feathers, dressed in dark blue jackets with green shoulder straps.
In front of the Palace is a bronze equestrian statue of king Karl XIV Johan, named after the street starting from the Palace doors. During the celebration of Constitution Day (17 may) it will pass the Grand parade columns Norwegians, carrying national flags and the royals greet the procession from the balcony of the Palace.
Around the Royal Palace surrounded by a large Park with ponds, frustrated by a court gardener of king Karl XIV Johan. Here come all the residents of Oslo to relax: sunbathing, rollerblading, badminton and fly kites. Near the Park is a wooden Villa “Grotto”, built for the Norwegian poet and social activist Henryk Wergeland in the mid-nineteenth century.
