The shipwreck Museum located in the old pier of Port Douglas at the entrance to the Bay Dixon.
The Museum building was erected in 1904, when the County Council Douglas took a loan from the Queensland Government to build a new berth for ships in a more convenient place in the Bay. The last time the pier was used for its intended purpose in 1958. Then for many years he was in private ownership. And in 1980 in the building, a former warehouse pier, opened a Museum of shipwrecks.
The Museum building some interesting architectural details: for example, its roof is built of blocks of size 30õ15 and 20h15 cm, and the walls are covered not outside, but inside is contributed to a better storage of sugar, put up in sacks. Today the Museum building is an important element of the urban landscape, it is perfectly visible from the sea and the hills surrounding the city.
The Museum exhibits numerous artifacts recovered from shipwrecks on the Great Barrier reef, is over 20 years collecting Ben Cropps. His collection includes vintage crockery, bronze tools and other items.
