Volcano Llullaillaco – stratovolcano with a height of 6739 m is located on the border of Argentina and Chile. Although this is the third highest mountain in Chile, it is rarely visited due to difficult access and the existence of minefields around. On the Chilean side of the volcano is a national Park Llullaillaco.

Llullaillaco considered an active volcano, the last eruption was recorded in 1854, 1866 and 1877. In addition, it is the second highest active volcano in the world, second only to the volcano Ojos del Salado.

There are two plausible versions explaining the origin of the name of the volcano Llullaillaco. In accordance with the first and best-known assumption: in Quechua llullu means "water that can't be found, despite a long search". Another version is that the language of the Aymara llullu means "soft substance that subsequently solidifies, i.e. lava flows, as dirty water, and then hardens.

The surroundings of the volcano Llullaillaco very beautiful. Rising to the top of the volcano, you can see guanacos, donkeys and a variety of birds.

There are two ways of ascent of the volcano. The Northern route reaches 4600 m, it can be overcome by car, southern route - length of 5000 m. Both of these sections of the route have hard snow, so make sure you always have specials. shoes and ice.

The first ascent, which was celebrated climbers, took place on 1 December 1952. Juan Gonzalez and the Chilean Bion Hereim found the sanctuary of the Incas on the summit of the volcano. During the expedition under the leadership of Johan Reinhard and Argentine archaeologist Constanza of Ceruti in 1999 mummies were discovered fifteen-year-old girls, boy and girls five to seven years, which were probably sacrificed more than 500 years ago. Of the eight mummies found so far on the peaks of the Andes, these are the best condition.
