Date of opening of the Museum of the air forces of the Northern fleet - August 20, 1976. This year celebrated the 40th anniversary since the establishment of the first aviation Association of the Northern Fleet in the village of Safonovo (old name - Dirty Lip). On the site of the Museum was previously the first airport for seaplanes.

Shortly before the anniversary of the political Department of the air force of the Northern fleet, an initiative was launched for the construction of such a Museum. Aviators-Severomorsk personally participated in the construction of the Museum of the air force SF. The design was also engaged local residents, military and veteran aviators.

The construction was carried out in a very short time. Less than a year, on the site of an old warehouse reconnaissance flight regiment, grew a new building. The warehouse building was partially rebuilt as a Museum. Not without the help of sponsors, in particular - the Kama automobile plant. They took an active part in the project and provided construction materials for the construction of the premises. The design of the building was entrusted to the "Mummagraphics", in particular his staff - L. L. Wilson and L. D. Popov.

The Museum collection is located in three halls. In the first room you can see exhibits of wartime, in the second are documentary evidence of the lost aviators, in the third – all materials relating to the period of the postwar period. The Museum also presents detailed information about the history of aviation of the Northern fleet, which was formed in 1936. In addition, the Museum houses personal belongings of the pilots, veterans of the Northern fleet. Among them - 53 pilot, awarded the title of hero of the Soviet Union. Perhaps many will remember the name of the legendary commander of the aviation regiment B.F.Safonov. He was twice awarded this title. Among our contemporaries six naval aviators were awarded the title hero of the Russian Federation. Also in the Museum are photographs, sculptures and paintings of famous authors - frontline photojournalist E. . Chaldeans, the people's artist of the USSR L. E. The Kerbel, honored worker of culture of the Russian Federation e. And. Titicaca, artist In. M. Vovk.

Hangar Museum houses planes and helicopters during the Second World war and post-war period, the USSR, Germany, UK, USA. Many of them suffered during the war, but were rebuilt by the hands of North sea pilots. There are also other techniques, for example, cars for servicing aircraft and airfields, radio-controlled target, the cab simulator. Unfortunately, some types of aircraft have been permanently lost due to the collapse of the roof of the old hangar. It happened at the end of the last century.

At the end of 2008 witnessed the transformation of the Museum, with the result that he became military history and exhibition Department in Safonovo the officers of the naval aviation of the Northern fleet.

Notable is the fact that during the filming of "Torpedo" (feature film, shot on film Studio "Lenfilm" in 1983) was used aviation equipment from the collection of this Museum.

The first Director of the Museum of the air force SF was L. A. Sorokin. Since 1977 she worked as a tour guide in the Museum, and then was appointed as its head. Being a historian by education, a position that she found a good use of their knowledge and worked for the Director until 1985, before moving to Moscow. During this short period of time she was able to turn the Museum into a large complex consisting of the Museum of the Northern fleet, the house-Museum of Y. A. Gagarin, the hangar, which housed a collection of aviation technology for military and post-war time. In addition, we can say that the Museum was a center of local history and military-Patriotic work in all of the Murmansk region and in the territory of the Kola Peninsula. Today the Museum is managed by Abakar Eugene Dmitrievna.

Every year in the Museum come tens of thousands of visitors.
