The monastery is one of the oldest Russian monasteries. It is located in the North of Suzdal along the Kamenka, near the ancient Kremlin.
The monastery was founded in 1207 by John, Bishop of Suzdal. His lands in ancient times was located on the territory tenements outside the city's fortifications. The first buildings of the monastery were made of wood, but up to now none of them came. The first stone buildings appeared here in the 16th century, the earliest extant at the present time the building is erected in the early 16th century The Cathedral.
In the 13th century next to The monastery was founded another monastery of the Trinity monastery intended for widows. According to the legend, it was founded as the fulfillment of the will of the PDP. Efrosini, daughter of Mikhail of Chernigov, who was tortured in the Horde.
In the late 17th century, at the Metropolitan Illarion, the buildings of the monastery have changed a lot. Here, in 1688, under the leadership of three famous Suzdal architects Ivan Mamin, Andrey Shmakov, Ivan Gryaznova were built by the famous dvuhlitrovye gate, to the West of the Cathedral was built luxuriously decorated porch. At the same time they had rebuilt the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity monastery, who later, in the 1930s, was blown up, and built his fence. From the buildings to have survived the graceful Holy gate, corner tower, now a part of the wall of the monastery. Trinity monastery in 1764 was abolished, and land with buildings moved to a more ancient neighbor.
In the early 19th century in the territory of the monastery to commemorate the victory over Napoleon's army was built 72-foot Prepodobenskaya the bell tower. Last on the monastery grounds appeared refectory Sretensky Church of red brick, built in pseudo-Russian style in 1882.
In 1923 The monastery was closed, its 12 bells were sent to the smelter, in the premises of the monastery were stationed guards of the political prison, which was located in the Holy evfiem monastery. In The Cathedral there was a power plant, the Holy gate was used as a fuel depot.
In 1999, the monastery was given to the Russian Orthodox Church. It was reopened as a convent of the Vladimir-Suzdal diocese.
The Cathedral is a temple without. Its chancel is adjoined with three apses. The groin vault covers the quadrangle, it is topped with a thin lightweight and high cupolas that is not usual for these types of structures. Smooth walls are cut with simple window embrasures, the side facades are decorated with false Gables, they are divided by pilasters into three parts. In the Central one - portals. The decor of the porch consists of a carved portal, architraves, decorated with plaits", "boobies", polychrome glazed tiles. Domes of the Cathedral has undergone transformation. Original helmet-shaped dome in the 19th century replaced the bulbs.
Dvuhlitrovye Holy gate is a gate with two different sized arches. They decorated his pants with tiles and stone carvings. A large arch – semicircular shape, a smaller arch decorated with fine rust. Tents, topped by small cupolas, standing on a low octagon with small Windows, the faces decorated with false Dormer Windows.
Prepodobenskaya the bell tower at the monastery appeared on the site burned down in the late 18th century hipped bell tower. The construction of this building, which became the tallest building in the city, was led by Mason from Suzdal Kuzmin. The belfry was built in the classical style and typical for its time, although it by no means fits into the overall urban architectural style. The bell tower levels, decreasing as you move up, based on the classic powerful portal with arch, they are crowned with a spire.
From the refectory of Sretenskaya Church, which was built in 1882 on the site of the old buildings have survived only a brick wall. The remains of the decoration of the Church indicate that it belongs to the pseudo-Russian style
Within the walls of this monastery remained Holy Trinity monastery gate. They are like the Holy gate of Alexandrovsky monastery, which is located nearby. And this is no accident. Their construction involved I. Gryaznov, who was the author of the 17th century buildings of the Trinity and of the monasteries.
