Scientific geological Museum named after A. A. Chernov was organized in 1968. But the question of its creation was started to raise much earlier. One of those who has repeatedly raised this issue, was Alexander Alexandrovich Chernov. They even had compiled a sample program, called "the Museum of the local region". The task of the Museum was to be confined to agitation by the local population interest in inanimate nature, including native land, familiarity with the practical value of inanimate objects and processes.
By the time of the organization of the Institute of Geology in 1958, it has accumulated large collections of stone material, which was kept by the staff themselves. Naturally accounting system collections were not. Many of them disappeared without a trace. Therefore there was a necessity of creation of the Museum. In 1969 it was released by order of the need to donate to the Museum collections. Since then, the process of creation and development of the geological Museum began to gain momentum.
The first decade of the Museum existed as a repository for collections. When creating the main Museum Fund immediately selected the most effective models for the creation of future exposure. Exposition of the Museum was opened in may 1978 for the 20th anniversary of the Institute of Geology. The author of the first exposure and subject-exposition plans became M. V. Fishman. Design work was done by artist V. Sagitov. In the end, was created quite compact, but rich in thematic material volume exposition of the mineral resources of North-Eastern European part of the USSR. In 1980 published the first Museum catalogue, which first were reported collections of flora and fauna of the Phanerozoic of the USSR, preserved in the Museum.
A characteristic feature of the geological Museum is that it shows only local samples, which characterize the mineral and geological structure of the North-East of the European part of the Soviet Union and the Northern part of the Urals. Originally it was planned to organize at the Museum 7 departments. In 1988 he was ready General Department of the Museum, and the Department of organic evolution and the earth's crust, the Department of mineral resources, which was posted more than a thousand exhibits. In 1989 departments were opened lithology, Petrology, tectonics. In 1990 he opened the mineralogical Department.
In 2007, on the basis of the private collection of items from A. P. gems Borovinskikh and with the financial support of the Ministry of natural resources of the Komi Republic was organized exhibition hall "Noah's ark". For 25 years, A. P. Borovinskikh collected articles of stone, depicting insects, birds, animals.
Currently, the Museum exhibition space is 350 sq. m. In the opening room lit main stages of the exploration of these places, important discoveries, the visitor became familiar with the geological Institute and the outstanding geologists.
The geological Museum is an academic institution. His exhibitions are designed for scientific research and the level of presenting information to the visitor. To broaden the range of visitors was developed different versions of the tours, which are specially adapted to the different age groups.
Now the main visitors of the Museum, students and schoolchildren. It hosts local history lessons for elementary school students. For senior classes, themed tours of the mineral resources of the region and the development of life on the planet. Also here classes for students of higher educational institutions of Syktyvkar on geological, environmental and geographical areas. The Museum also hosts lectures for students of the physical faculty of Syktyvkar state University in geological disciplines, state pedagogical Institute, Forest Institute. The geological Museum is a fixed base practice for students of Minor Academy, Komi science centre. Processing of the collection of Museum collections, students under the guidance of Museum staff write coursework.
Organized in the geological Museum and work with delegations from abroad. The Museum was visited by representatives of more than twenty countries around the world.
