Pharoah's Island Photo: Island Of The Pharaohs

8 km South of Taba is the rocky islet on which in 1115, the crusaders built a fortress to protect Christian pilgrims coming from Jerusalem to the monastery of St. Catherine. In 1171, the fortress was captured by the Arabs led by the famous Saladin, but in 1183 was passed back to the crusaders. The fortress was destroyed and now there remained only one tower and the ruins of the walls. In the evening there are sound and light productions, when illuminated fortress looks very impressive against the dark waters of the Gulf of Aqaba.
