Often this small town is called the "balcony of the Alps".

The history of Sauze d'oulx is closely linked to the history of the Val di Susa. Here were the legions of the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar, hordes ready, the troops of the Lombards and the Burgundians. This whole area, which was part of the so-called Dovenski possessions, in 1343, the year it was taken to France, and in 1713, the year by the Treaty of Utrecht was transferred to the Savoy dynasty. This was the headquarters of the French army during the battle at Assietta in the middle of the 18th century, and all died in that battle were buried in the town, later called the Las Fosas.

The name of the town – Sauze d'oulx – was "Latinized" by order of Mussolini and began to sound like Salice d Ultio, but after the Second World war the original name again became official. With the fading of agriculture that began in the 1960-ies, Sauze d'oulx, gradually became transformed into a tourist resort, focused on skiing. Today it is one of the most popular ski resorts of Val di SUSY, and its trails and lifts from a technical point of view are considered some of the best in the world! There are just over 400 km of pistes and 92 works lift. The town has well developed tourist infrastructure – built good hotels and Alpine refuges, restaurants and bars serving local cuisine, created conditions for a family holiday.
