The Church of Sveta Bogorodica (Holy mother of God) is a Bulgarian Orthodox Church in the late middle ages, located in the town of Sozopol, Burgas region. The Church is located in the Northern part of the old town and was built in the XV century on the site of an older Church.
The temple is a three-nave one-apse pseudometric. The exterior is low rise building is easily confused with the common house, this architectural solution is explained by the fact that during the Ottoman rule the Church in the country had to be not higher and not larger mosques (however, this could not guarantee that the temple will not be destroyed). The Church is built of hewn stone and strengthened by wooden props.
For many centuries of its existence the building has repeatedly been modified so that it is very difficult to judge what was its original form. On the walls inside and traces of old frescoes, but still valuable wood-carved iconostasis (decorated with plant motifs and scenes from the Scriptures), pulpit and Bishop's throne are made in the XVIII century masters Debarshi school.
In 1927 the building was declared a site of national historical heritage ("national antiquities"), and later, in 1962, an architectural monument of national importance. In 1967, the Ministry of culture of Bulgaria also announced the iconostasis of the Church's artistic monument of national importance.
Today, the Church of virgin Mary is an active Church Bulgarian Orthodox Church and is open to visitors.
