Verona's amphitheater, located on the main city square Piazza Bra, is the third largest ancient amphitheater built in the era of Ancient Rome, and one of the most well-preserved. Historians date this construction is about 30 ad: then, it consisted of 4 elliptical rings, and was lined with white and pink limestone. His current facade is made of stone, river pebbles and bricks. About two thousand years ago on this stage, accommodates more than 30 thousand people, was carried out brutal Gladiator fights, naval battles-naumachie and circus performances. Unfortunately, a strong earthquake of 1117, almost completely destroyed the outer wall of the amphitheater. However, the role of the arena in the city's life has not diminished: in the middle ages here organized demonstrative executions of heretics, jousting tournaments and festivals, and later fights with bulls. Finally, with the advent of the 20th century, the amphitheatre was the main ground of Verona for staging Opera performances, which are annually visited by more than half a million people! The first production was "Aida" by Giuseppe Verdi, which became a kind of hallmark of the new theatre stage. Since then, there were the legendary Opera singers Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Renata Tebaldi and other world stars. Here are the shows and stars of pop music. More recently, the capacity of the amphitheater was 20 thousand spectators, but for security reasons was reduced to 15 thousand.
