In Northwest Bulgaria, near the village of Robes and the town of Belogradchik is one of the largest and undoubtedly the most beautiful and famous caves in the country – MAGURA. It was formed inside limestone Russkogo mound at altitude 461 m above sea level. The age of onset of formation of the cave is 15 million years. Once through MAGURA was a river, but it failed and the river changed its course, forming near the cave of the lake.

The inner space of the MAGURA is divided into the main gallery and three side branches. Impressive dimensions Triumphal hall: 128, length 58 in width and 28 in height. But not only the abundance of the MAGURA site stalaktones, stalactites and stalagmites makes it a unique natural object, which annually attracts large number of tourists. The cave has long been the object of attention of scientists. The first archaeological excavations, which have been found objects of prehistoric life were held V. Mykovam in 1927. In the 70s engaged in research of the Archaeological Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Museum of the city of Vidin. In the MAGURA site were found abundant evidence of being here ancient man: clay dwellings, ovens, knives, scrapers, awls, ornaments made of animal bones, stone and ceramic products. Findings date back to the late Paleolithic era (100-40 thousand years BC).

In addition, scientists have discovered more than 700 samples of rock art images, figures of people, animals, plants, the sun and stars. This is the oldest traces of primitive art of the period in Europe.
