Among the many temples in the Vienna special attention deserves the Church of our lady Victorious (Maria-vom-Ina) is a Roman Catholic parish Church located on Mariahilfer straße in the district Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus.
The Church of our lady Victorious was built by the famous Austrian-German architect Friedrich von Schmidt, author of the famous Vienna city hall. The temple project was developed in the late 50-ies, the construction began in 1868 and lasted seven years.
The Church building erected in popular in those days, the architectural style known as "historicism" or "eclecticism", a feature which is a harmonious blend of several different styles (neo-Gothic, neo-Baroque, neo-Renaissance, etc.). This is an awesome and very original building with a huge dome, with two massive towers and lots of small turrets, giving the building a certain grandiosity. Overall the exterior of the temple is dominated by the neo-Gothic style, while the interior is very reminiscent of the neo-Byzantine style. The height of the temple with a dome is 68 m.
The name of the Church was in honor of a famous ancient icons depicting scenes of the Nativity, through which, according to legend, the Catholics were victorious at the battle of White mountain (one of the most important episodes of the Thirty years war) near Prague in November 1620. A copy of this icon you can see to the right of the altar of the temple. The original is kept in the Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria in Rome.
The Church of our lady Victorious is an important architectural monument and is considered one of the most beautiful churches in Vienna.
