Glashaus Photo: Glashaus

One of the most striking monuments of Aachen – Glashaus or House Herb – at the same time is also one of the oldest buildings in the city. Its construction was completed in the distant 1267, which in itself impresses the tourists and residents.

The original building was built for it was a town hall, and it was. Nearby was the Central square of the city, which served as a place for selling fish caught in the nearby rivers and lakes. The main difference Glashaus – traditional facade in the Gothic style, although today the building is possible to find traces of the influence of other styles of architecture. To the year 1349, when the town hall was moved to another building, here in the Grass House – located city court of Aachen, and then a prison.

In 1686 there was a fire, which is pretty much destroyed the building. However, shortly afterwards it was restored. We can not say that the building suffered during the occupation years, and then it was decided to demolish it. What a miracle agentem managed to save it – is unknown, but in 1886 there was a reorganization of the building and found it exactly the image that appears before the eyes of today: high Windows, decorated with pointed arches, niches under the roof with figures of electors were led by Rudolf Habsburg, which adorn the building. Ever since Grasshouse it housed the city archives.
