One of the most interesting estates Aachen – Gut Kalkofen – known from time immemorial. The construction of the manor house dates to the 14th century. Its first owner was the mayor of Aachen Arnold von Kalkofen – hence the name, entrenched behind the estate for centuries. Then the traces of the building in the history of lost, the following reference can be found in the marriage contract of Adam von Haren, Mrs. Agnes von Weyer 15th century.
Being almost always in private hands, the estate has been preserved to our times in spite of war and destruction. Today, like centuries ago, it is a complex of buildings, surrounded by meadows. The first time the manor was rebuilt and, accordingly, has become interesting from an architectural point of view back in 1750. The author of the project was the famous architect Johann Josef Couven.
The estate was built in the best traditions of Romanesque buildings, but its original tower and courtyard give it a charm today. Among the most significant elements you can highlight the round tower, which combines South and East wing: solid construction smoothes out different styles and is a kind of hallmark of the entire estate.
In the early 20th century the manor house was a charming garden, which undoubtedly added to her beauty. However, during the Second world war the building was greatly damaged and required reconstruction. In 1956, the estate was closed and up to 1983 the fate of her was disappointing. But reconstruction began in 1983 and ended in 1989, returned to Aachen Gut Kalkofen, and today this attraction pleases both tourists and residents.
