In the center of the ancient city of Alatyr, Chuvash Republic regional Museum, founded by a connoisseur of the local region Y. B. Novikov in 1975.

Originally the Museum was located in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, built in 1703, but after the transfer of religious buildings to their rightful owners, in 2001 Alatyr Museum of local history moved in a two-story brick building, where is located today. Collected within the decades, the Museum include archaeological, palaeontological, ethnographic and natural science collections, historical documents and photographs of the region, personal belongings of famous countrymen, scientific archives and the works Alatyr local historians. The most interesting collection of ornithological and painting with graphics by local artists.

In science we describe the most rich among the museums of Chuvashia Zoological exposition and paleontological materials. A unique collection of archaeological artefacts and materials on the history of the region located in the Historical Department of the Museum. Here are the exhibitions: "Peasant house", "monk's Cell", "Music room". In the Exhibition hall Museum presents works Alatyr artists and regularly hosts a variety of exhibitions.

Recently the Museum was enriched with unique samples of ancient pottery, a collection of antique samovars, glassware, ceramics, metal, wood and table porcelain of the nineteenth century. The pride of the Museum are collected materials about famous countrymen: S. Erzya, A. N. Krylov, A. I. Sudaev and many other outstanding people of Chuvashia.
