From the Western entrance to the city of Alatyr towering red-brick Church of the Holy Apostle James the son of Alphaeus, built in the late nineteenth century. The area of several hectares around the Church, now included in the boundaries of the city of Alatyr were called Yamskaya Sloboda.
The arrival of James the son of Alphaeus, was founded in 1749, and in place of a stone building more than a hundred years there was a wooden Church. In 1875 by the parishioners Yamskoy Posad began to build a brick Church with a bell tower. In addition to the Church was built two houses for the clergy and a gatehouse. In the bell tower with a height of forty meters in 1894 was with the main bell, brought from Simbirsk on the team with twelve horses. In 1895 the construction of the temple was completed and was consecrated the main altar in honor of the Apostle James the son of Alphaeus. According to parishioners, the ringing of a bell was heard at a distance of ten kilometers to the village Akhmatova). Also Yamskaya the temple was of good singing young singers.
In 1930-e years Jakovsky the Church was closed, took off the domes, crosses and bells, leaving a beautiful building for storage of agricultural products. During the war the building was used to accommodate soldiers. In 1993 the building was returned to the faithful, and in may 1996 the Church of James the son of Alphaeus, was re-consecrated by the Archbishop of Cheboksary and Chuvashia Barnabas.
In our day beautiful Yamskaya temple of red brick partially restored, the area is sanitized, and restored the former glory of the best hymns in the Alatyr region.
