High on a picturesque hill in Almeria is an ancient defensive complex – fortress Almeria. The name of the fortress Alcazaba comes from the Arabic word al-qasbah, meaning a fortification of walls, located in the city.

The Alcazaba was built in the late 10th century during the rule of Abd-ar-Rahman III. This is the biggest fortress of the period of Moorish rule in the territory of the Pyrenees. With its location on a high hill, the fortress during the whole time of its existence remained invulnerable to enemies. In 1477, the castle was conquered by the Christian king Alfonso VII, but after some time was again captured by the Arabs. And only in 1489, the fortress was finally taken over by the Christian Royal dynasty.

In the early 20th century most of the buildings of the fortress complex was restored. Today the complex consists of two rows of walls, inside of which you can see the Palace, has in plan the shape of a triangle, terraces, orchards. Special attention is given located on the territory of the fortress by the water system, which consists of the well, the fountain and the water tank and showing visitors the principles of supply Alcazaba water. There are also two museums, the collection of which reveal the history of the fortress.

In 1933 Alcazaba Almeria was recognized as a national architectural treasure, and she was granted the status of National historical and architectural monument.
