All cities in their own way remarkable, but probably only in Amsterdam, with its distinctive Outlook on life, could have such a structure as het muziektheater.
Stopera is a building complex located in the centre of Amsterdam, Waterlooplein, in the bend of the Amstel river. It is a municipality and the Dutch national Opera and ballet theatre. Here is the home stage of the National Symphony orchestra. The name comes from the merger of two Dutch words: stadhuis (town hall) and "opera".
The complex was built in 1986, while talking about what the city needed new musical theatre and the new building of the municipality, was conducted from the beginning of XX century. Due to the constant lack of funds the construction was delayed and the projects were not approved. In 1979, an architect from Vienna Wilhelm Holzbauer has offered to host and municipality, and musical theatre in the same building. A revolutionary proposal suddenly had the taste of the city authorities; the government also agreed. Among the citizens were unhappy, the voices of protest, but in 1986 the Music theatre Amsterdam opened its doors to the public. City officials celebrated the housewarming after two years, after which the famous Amsterdam flea market Waterlooplein could finally return to its historic place at the time of construction, the market was moved to the Rue Ravenburger.
Externally Stopera is a massive building faced with red brick. Curved semicircle the facade is decorated with white marble. Numerous panoramic Windows from the lobby of the theater provide excellent views of the river.
