Museum ships of the Viking age in Roskilde is the Danish national Museum, where you can learn more about the history and structure of ships, seafaring, shipbuilding, used in prehistoric times and the middle ages.
In 1070, five Viking ships were deliberately sunk in Roskilde fjord in order to block the most important at that time the navigation channel and to protect Roskilde from enemy attacks from the sea. These five ships were named Skuldelev ships, in 1962 they were raised from the depths of the sea. It turned out that these five ships belonged to completely different classes of ships, from cargo to the military.
The ship Museum the Viking era was established in 1969 specifically to show Roskilde fjord and submit five ships found. In the late 1990s, the Museum has expanded thanks to new finds: managed to find 9 more ships, among which was the longest military Viking ship ever found, scientists, reaches 36 meters in length.
In the workshop of the Museum, visitors can observe the work of skilled craftsmen recreating replicas of prehistoric ships. In the archaeological workshop you can see how the finds are stored and studied. In summer, children and adults can enjoy lots of exciting games in the fresh air.
Museum with many departments and artifacts that reveal the age of the Vikings, their life, their art of conquering the seas, became, along with the Cathedral of Roskilde, one of the most popular attractions in the city.
