The open air Museum Photo: open air Museum "Gorgippia"

The open air Museum "Gorgippia" is a vast excavation site of an ancient Greek town that is part of the Bosporan Kingdom, with monuments and works of ancient art. The ancient city of Gorgippia was founded over 2500 years ago (5th century BC). For the first time it is mentioned in the first century Greek geographer and historian Strabo. Gorgippia was one of the richest cities of the Bosporan Kingdom, its major seaport.

In 1959, when digging a hole for household purposes, found at depths of 1, 5 m from the surface layer of burnt clay, and below a lot of ash and soot. Here were found and very interesting antique things, including black lacquer figural lamp in the form of a black woman with a basket of fruit on her head. In 1965, on the street Potapova, archaeologists discovered a cluster of breast images of Demeter and her daughter Persephone. Apparently, there was a temple of Demeter. Of great artistic value is the marble head of Aphrodite, 1st century, found during excavations in 1968 on the territory of the reserve.

On the death of Gorgippia tell us only archaeological excavations. Assume that in the first half of the third century Gorgippia was attacked by nomads and the city was razed to the ground.
