National Museum of contemporary art in Athens was founded in October 2000 and is the only public institution in Athens, specializing in contemporary Greek and international art. The inspirer and Director of the Museum became Anna Kafesi (former curator of the National gallery).

Starting its activity, the Museum had no premises of its own, nor the collection, and his first exhibition was rather experimental in nature. The Museum collection was formed on the basis of how private acquisitions and private donations. At the present day, in the ownership of the Museum has more than 700 exhibits - paintings, drawings, installations, sculpture, photography, video, new media and more. In the Museum you can see works by such masters as Ilya Kabakov, Gary hill, Nan Goldin, Allan (circular, Dimitris Alithinos, Nikos Mavridis, bill viola, Bruce Nauman, Mona hatoum, Vito acconci, Dan Graham, Chris burden, Nam June Paik, Kostas Tsoclis, Linda Benglis etc. the pride of the Museum, of course, is its magnificent library.

Home to the new Museum was selected located in the centre of Athens, the old industrial building at the former Fix brewery, built in the second half of the 19th century. In 50-ies of the 20th century was a large-scale reconstruction of the brewery by the famous architect Takis of Senetosa, but after two decades the building was abandoned and gradually fell into disrepair. In order to turn this masterpiece of industrial architecture in the Museum, meets all modern requirements and standards of such institutions, required a global reconstruction.

In the first years of its work, the leadership of the National Museum of modern art organized the exhibition on the ground floor of a former brewery, but later the collection of the Museum is temporarily moved to the building of the Athens Conservatory, and in a former brewery began large-scale construction works. In the building with a total area of about 20000 sq. m. there will be space for permanent and temporary exhibitions, archive, library, workshops, specially equipped classrooms for lectures and seminars, as well as shops and cafes.

The reconstruction of the building allegedly planned to complete by October 2013 and in March 2014 it is expected the Grand opening of the National Museum of modern art.
