The Boqueria market is an ancient market city of Barcelona, access from Las Ramblas. The indoor market, built of steel and glass, occupies a large area, is $ 2583 sq. m.

The history of this market dates back from Medieval times, from the beginning of the 13th century. Initially it was a place where they sold meat, then pigs. In those days the market was outside the city gate, and here was a chance to show their goods to visiting traders. Until 1794 the market called Mercat Bornet or Mercat de la Palla (straw market).

First, the market was an open area surrounded by pillars, which were used for trade, and which subsequently had planned to build. But for a long time the market had no official status, since no work on his device was conducted. And only in 1826 that the place was officially recognized as a market. In 1840 it began to erect the building market of the pavilion project and under the guidance of architect Mas Vila. Officially the year of opening Boqueria is considered 1853. In 1911, on the territory of the Boqueria opened a new fish market, in 1914, created a new metal roof that has been preserved.

To date, the Boqueria market is visited by many people. Here are lined up in long, neat rows of stalls where you can find anything from a huge range of meat products, cheeses, sausages, mushrooms, fish, seafood, beautifully laid out vegetables, fruits, sweets and desserts.

But still Boqueria is not just a market, this is a truly historic part of the city.
