Municipal market of Chania Photo: Municipal market of Chania

In the heart of the city of Chania is the Municipal market. In the late 19th century this area was the edge of town, where the townspeople and inhabitants of surrounding neighborhoods brought their goods for sale. We can say that it was a typical farmers market.

In 1908, the municipality had decided to improve the conditions for trade. In 1911 construction began on the indoor Municipal market on the model of the covered market in Marseille (France). It was built at the Venetian Bastion platform, a large part of the walls which had been destroyed in order to improve the city's infrastructure. New market occupied an area of 4000 sq. m. It was built in the shape of a cross and had four main entrances. The construction ended in 1913. The official opening took place on 4 December 1913, Prime Minister of Greece Eleftherios Venizelos. On the East and West side markets selling meat, the Western part of the market was reserved for fish production at the North and South ends of the market sold vegetables and fruits.

In may 1941 during the Second world war, the South-Eastern part of the market was completely destroyed. During the German occupation soldiers occupied the Central arcades, which were adapted for the needs of the army. After the war restoration works were carried out.

On the market today, there are 76 stores, including vegetable, meat, cheese, fruit and, of course, fish sellers. In the cozy restaurant, located on the territory of the market, you can enjoy excellent Mediterranean cuisine, which is traditionally rife with various seafood. In a small cafe you can rest and have a Cup of coffee, watching the market turmoil, and after in the souvenir shops to purchase a charming Souvenirs.
