Musical Jewish theatre in Birobidzhan is one of the cultural places of recreation, not only local residents but also visitors alike. The theatre has an interesting history. In March 1977 the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR, it was decided to establish in the city of Birobidzhan Chamber music theatre. The team was headed by honored worker of arts of RSFSR, composer Yuri Sherling, who in a very short time was able to create a unique troupe. From its first days of operation, the theatre was distinguished by the originality of his performing style that was characterized by the fusion of nation and modernity. A rehearsal hall and theatre all his company originally was located in Moscow.
In November 1977, the theatre opened its season in the city of Birobidzhan. The first performance was the Opera-mystery called "the Black bridle for a white Mare, which brought the theater triumphant success. All subsequent premiere of the theatre was placed on the stage of the Philharmonic.
The theatre has toured not only throughout the country but also abroad. The first tour abroad took place in Germany. In addition, the theater has toured in Bulgaria, Canada, USA, Chisinau, Moscow, Yaroslavl, Hungary, Vladivostok, Sverdlovsk, and so on. Critics around the world praised the musical culture, and professional dance training theatre artists. At the anniversary celebrations devoted to the 50th anniversary of the Jewish Autonomous region, the theater first showed the Opera-the song "Golden wedding" by M. Gluz and Y. Serlenga that the spectators enjoyed great success.
In February 1995, the Legislative Assembly of the Jewish Autonomous region, it was decided to close the theatre, explaining that in the budget there are no funds to maintain it.
In 2003, the Jewish theatre of Birobidzhan was revived again. For 6 years it was directed by talented Director V. Zemlyansky. Jewish musical theatre "Ecclesiastes" raised a number of performances, among them "the Metamorphosis", "Freilekhs", "the Marriage of Figaro", "Ivanov and Rabinovich or AI Gow Tu Haifa", "Threepenny Opera" and more. V. Zemlyansky and staff brought huge success to the theatre. Currently the theatre is headed disciple V. Zemlyansky – S. Kordylewski, who also, like his master, full of interesting creative ideas.
