The Museum of modern art EAO is one of the cultural attractions of the city of Birobidzhan. The Museum is located on the street Sholem Aleichem in the building of the City Palace of culture. Its Grand opening as a branch of the far Eastern art Museum took place in April 1989.. the Main initiator and founder of the Museum made its permanent Director Kosvintsev B. Y.

In July 1996, the institution became an independent, retaining its original name. In October 2000, he received the name of the State institution of culture "Museum of modern art JAR", and since 2009 – is considered a State budget institution of culture "Museum of modern art EAO".

The formation of the Museum's collection began with 1989, that is, from the moment of its opening. The Museum consists of several sections: exhibition, cultural, educational, and Department funds. In our days, the Museum collections number more than 1,300 exhibits.

"Calling card" of the Museum is a collection of pictures called "the old Testament through the eyes of contemporary artists". Now collection this collection consists of over 200 works of different genres and styles created by artists from several regions of the country.

Since the opening of the Museum, there is formed an amazing collection of paintings by artists EAO. Currently it exhibits paintings by more than 30 authors from various genres, types, techniques of fine art. This collection covers the period from 70-ies of the XXth century to the present day. In addition to these, the Museum of modern art EAO collected "traditional" collection of still life, landscape and portrait.

For all the hours of the Museum within its walls was conducted more than 180 exhibitions. Also at the Museum is not only the study of modern art, but also the creativity of the artists of the Far East.
