Rust is an Austrian town located in the region of Burgenland on the Western shore of lake Neusiedl near the border with Hungary. Rust is the smallest administrative district, and the lowest statutory city in Austria. He was endowed with the rights of a free city in 1681. The city is famous for its wines, especially the "Ruster Ausbruch".

In pre-Christian times the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of noricum and belonged to surroundings Celtic castle. The rust was first mentioned in 1317 as Ceel (from the Hungarian word "Szil" – "elm") in the documents of the Hungarian king Charles I Robert. Citizens of the town received market rights in 1470 together with the legitimate right to use on the barrels of wine the letter R (the first letter of the city name). The city quickly grew rich thanks to the wine industry, and in 1681 by order of the Hungarian king Leopold I became independent. In 1921, the rust came into the possession of Austria.

Old city annually attracts many tourists from all over Europe. House of 16-19 centuries Renaissance and Baroque retained their facades with beautiful Windows and moldings. Picturesque arched portals, staircases and arcade - the whole Old town is protected by the Hague Convention on the protection of cultural property. In 2001, the Old town of rust was inscribed on the world heritage list of UNESCO. The rust was voted the most beautiful town in Burgenland. All the houses have retained their original function of residential and commercial premises.

Since 1999, the city hosts a music festival, where the participants perform their own compositions exclusively on guitar.
