The Castle Of Schlaining Photo: Castle Of Schlaining

The castle of Schlaining is located on the outskirts of Stadtschlaining in Burgenland. Originally the fortress was located on the trade route that led from North to South through Bernstein. The castle was first mentioned in letopisy year. Its current name, the castle was only in 1786, after several phonetic transformations of the original title Zloynuk.

Presumably, the first owners of the castle was the dynasty of the Yak. In 1271, the fortress was already in the possession of von Hussinger who lost her in 1327 in the fight against king Robert I of Anjou. After his victory, the Hungarian king gave the castle to the genus Kanizsai, who remained the owners of Slaining to 1371. In 1397, the castle became the property of George Topeka and his brother Johann. The brothers owned the castle for quite a long time, to the year 1445, when the Emperor Frederick III, having conquered the lands of the Schlaining, gave the castle Andreas Baumkirchen. The new owner bought 30 surrounding villages, thereby greatly expanding ownership.

In the mid-16th century, king Ferdinand gave the castle of Schlaining dynasty batthyány. The fortress was in the hands of the family for many years. The last of the batthyány was the Prime Minister of Hungary, Ludwig batthyány. After his execution in 1849, the castle became the property of the government of Hungary.

In 1980 the castle was transferred to the Austrian Federal state of Burgenland, namely the center for peace studies and conflict resolution. In the castle of Schlaining is located the headquarters of the center, were held the international conference, and in 2000 opened the European Museum of the World. The Museum has an exhibition dedicated to the history of wars and armed conflicts. Its motto Museum chose the words of Alfred Nobel "If you want peace, you must prepare him." The exposition is located on two floors.
