The national Museum is the main all over Northern Thailand. The Department of Arts awarded him the title of Center for the study and preservation of the culture of Chiang Mai and throughout Thailand to the North of it. At the opening 6 February 1973 kindly agreed to attend the king and Queen.
The Museum building is designed in traditional Northern Thai-style Lanna. In 1966 was the reconstruction of the Museum on the occasion of the Golden jubilee of the king, appeared in the halls illuminated displays, more informative material and new exhibits.
Only Museum features 6 large exposures: the Nature of the Lanna Kingdom, including Geology, ecology, geography and prehistoric settlement; the History of the Lanna Kingdom from the Foundation of Chiang Mai; Chiang Mai in the Kingdom of Siam (later Thailand); Trade and Economics Chiang Mai from 1782 to 1939; Modern life and the development of Northern Thailand, including agriculture and industry, banking, international relations and health; the Development of Lanna art and art of Thailand from the era of Dvaravati to the present day.
The most valuable exhibits of the national Museum of Chiang Mai are: bronze head of the Buddha “Phra Saen Swae” in the Lanna style of the XIV-XV century, bronze Buddha statue in the posture of “Subordinate Maru” in the Lanna style of the XVI-XVII century, painted chest for Buddhist Scriptures on wooden plates XIX century, the footprint of the Buddha, inlaid with mother of pearl and gold leaf, pottery of Sankampang XIV-XVI century.
In the national Museum of Chiang Mai is an interesting bookstore, rare publications on the culture and history of Thailand.
