Gate of St. Severin in the Middle ages was a part of the city wall. After they took the main road to the South leading to the beautiful city of Bonn.

The first mention of this building date from the XIII century, in that period, the gate got kind of quite massive and asymmetrical design, with a hexagonal tower, complemented by a scalloped top. This tower, located on a rectangular base, forming a gate construction of the four floors. After decades above the base were even finished two towers, but much smaller, in the XVII century, built a special tent roof.

Gate of St. Severin was considered a place where greeted by high-ranking individuals who had arrived in Cologne. For example, in 1235 there was a meeting of the Princess Isabella English, future wife of Frederick II, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.

These impressive gates has long been one of the main entrances to the city, they are perfectly preserved its original appearance, despite the intervening centuries. Gate of St. Severin represent the greatness of that defensive system of Cologne, which was peculiar to him, since the thirteenth century. Their shape was unusual for its time, but the grandeur and massiveness of the structures can not leave indifferent any tourist.

Near the gate in 2005 was discovered Bastion of St. Severin, the history of which dates back to 1474. But we know about this place it was much later, when construction began on one of the subway lines in the city. Since 1881 at the gate opened the natural history Museum, later renamed the Museum of hygiene. In 1979, there is a community center offering their facilities for private events.
