Academic theatre named after Shota Rustaveli is one of the cultural attractions in Tbilisi. The theater is located on the Central Avenue of the city - Shota Rustaveli - and is one of the most beautiful buildings that are here.

Academic theatre was built in the early first half of the twentieth century, but despite this, the original finish of the building has been preserved until today. The theater lobby was painted in 1919, "the great four" - L. Gudiashvili, S. Ridge, D. Kakabadze and Sergei Sudeikin.

The modern theatre was founded in 1921 on the basis of which existed from 1920 State drama theatre. In 1921, the institution received the name of Shota Rustaveli.

Since the mid 20-ies, the theatre was managed by A. Ahotel. Then the most important place in the theatrical repertoire was given to Soviet drama. Performances such as "Anzor" Shanshiashvili, Rift Lavrenev, "Lamar" by Vazha Pshavela, "the Robbers" by Schiller and others eventually formed the heroic-romantic direction of the Tbilisi theatre, pushing the team into the ranks of the best theaters of the USSR. In 1966 the theatre was awarded the title of academic. And today productions of this academic theater of delight not only Tbilisi residents, but also visitors to the city. Currently Director of the theatre is renowned Georgian theatre figure R. Sturua.
