The Cathedral, which is the parish Church of the city, is located about 100 metres from the main square Karlstad. This cruciform-plan Church with strong stone walls, visible even from the bridge, located five kilometers to the North.

In 1616 the Church burned down, like most other buildings in Karlstad, in the Wake of the horrific fire that hit the city. But in 1719 the second Church suffered the same fate as the first - it was burnt. Some Church plate still managed to save this time, for example, 2 chandeliers of the 17th and early 18th century.

After the second Church burned down, the third was erected in 1723-1730, new together due to the increased threat of flooding at the old place. It was also decided that on the hill the fire risk will be minimal.

The new building of the Cathedral was built in the style of minimalism, and the basis was taken the Baroque style. In 1865 Karlstad again suffered from a devastating fire. The roof and towers of the Cathedral were destroyed forever. During the restoration works of the building were added some neoclassical features, and the tower was fitted with new high spire with embedded clock.
