Ibn Danan Synagogue Photo: Ibn Danan Synagogue

Ibn Danan synagogue, located in Fes, one of the historic sights of Fes. The synagogue was erected in the middle of XVII century in the heart of the Jewish quarter Mella, which translates from Arabic as "salt". This is surrounded by a huge wall quarter was very different from the other quarters of Fes, as the Windows of Jewish homes unlike others, out on the street, not the courtyard. Mella became the first Jewish quarter in Morocco and was located close to the Sultan Palace.

In 1999, Ibn Danan synagogue has undergone a serious restoration work. This is one of the most modest of buildings in the quarter Mella. Externally it has the appearance of a conventional house with a simple door and Windows located high up on the walls. At the entrance to the synagogue on the right door post you can see a mezuzah. Previously, the synagogue belonged to the family of Ben Danan – the origin of Sephardic Jews.

Under the main prayer area is mikvah, collect all the rainwater. The reservoir has a depth of about five feet, which is allowed to plunge into the water head first. Visitors can descend to the mikvah, to examine it more closely.

To date, no synagogue in the quarter Mella, including Ibn Danan, not used for its intended purpose, because this quarter is almost no Jewish population. But despite this, many synagogues, including Ibn Danan, are protected by local governments and were included in the list of world heritage of UNESCO. In 2011, the synagogue Ibn Danan was visited by Prince Charles.
