Port Ticinese Photo: Porta Ticinese

Port Ticinese, formerly known as Port Chikka and Port Marengo, a former city gate of Milan. Facing South-West, Porta Ticinese were built together with the Spanish walls in the 16th century, but the original structure was demolished and rebuilt only in the early 19th century. The name of the Port Ticinese is used to refer to both the gate and the surrounding area, part of the administrative Zone 6. Interestingly, in this area there is another medieval gate with the same name. Today Port Ticinese is one of the sights of Milan and is a popular tourist attraction.

The name of the Port Ticinese literally means "gateway to Ticino" refers to the Ticino river, which crosses the po valley to the South-West of Milan. The old name of the gate Port Chicka — was in Vogue during the Spanish rule in Milan in the 16th century (distorted Spanish word "Chica" is small), and the name of the Port Marengo existed in the era of Napoleon.

As mentioned above, the original gate of the 16th century were demolished and in their place at the beginning of the 19th century built a new architect Luigi Cagnola designed in the neoclassical style. Today, they represent a massive pillars, surmounted by a tympanum, and are considered one of the outstanding examples of neoclassical architecture in Milan.
