The Abbey of Wettingen-Mehrerau — territorial-administrative unit of the Roman Catholic Church in the diocese, reports directly to the Holy see, and managed by the Abbot of the Benedictine monastery.

The monastery was founded in 611 Holy Columbanus, who, being expelled from Laksola, built here a Church, and somewhat later the monastery. In the year 1079 sent to the Wettingen-Mehrerau monk Gottfried reformed the monastery and introduced the rule of Saint Benedict. At the end of the 11th century the monastery was restored by Ulrich (count of Bregenz) and is inhabited by monks from the Abbey of St. Peter of Konstanz (Germany). In the 12-13th century, the monastery became the property of the many nearby lands, and the 16th century had already 65 parishes.

In the mid-16th century during the reformation, the monastery was the basis of the support of Catholicism in the region of Vorarlberg. The Abbot Ulrich Metz had a huge impact on people in the region by setting them against religious innovations. In the mid-17th century during the war with the Swedes, the monastery was badly damaged and looted. By 1738, the monastery was restored, but in 1805 the results Presurgical world site Vorarlberg together with the Abbey moved to Bavaria after the defeat of Austria at the battle of Austerlitz. In 1806, the monastery was disbanded and the buildings burned. In 1807, the remaining buildings were sold at auction and later dismantled for materials for the construction of the harbour Landau.

In 1853, when the land had reverted Austria, with the permission of Emperor Franz Joseph I of land for the monastery were purchased. The Abbot of the new monastery became a monk of the Cistercian Abbey of Wettingen. Officially the Cistercian Abbey of Wettingen-Mehrerau was opened on 18 October 1854.

In 19-20 century the Abbey was actively developing, in 1920, was purchased by the nearby castle, which today houses the health centre and secondary school with boarding school.
