The new Church Photo: the New Church

A new Church is one of the main attractions of Delft. This ancient Church, which was founded in the late XIV century, officially it is called the Church. Ursula and New means simply because that it's in the city already had one of the stone Church. Bartholomew, which became known as the Old one.

Wooden Church in honour of the virgin Mary began building on the Market square in 1351, after poor Simon had a vision of a Golden Church. After years of persuasion by the city Council still has consented to the construction, which lasted for nearly three centuries. In the XV century, the Church bears the name of St. Ursula. In plan the Church is a cross, is the traditional form of the Christian churches. In 1536 in the tower struck by lightning, the building suffered from fire, and a hundred years later, in 1654, when an explosion at a gunpowder warehouse Church was again heavily damaged. In 1872 the again zipper hits the spire of the tower. The tower, rebuilt again, and today the tower of the New Church – the second highest after the tower of Utrecht Cathedral, its height with a spire is 109 meters.

The new Church is famous because it is a family tomb of the Royal family. The first was buried here William I of orange, nicknamed Silent. He was murdered in Delft in 1584 and was buried here, in the New Church, as the traditional burial place of the princes of orange in Breda was in the hands of the Spaniards. The latter were buried here Queen Juliana and Prince Bernard, grandmother and grandfather of the present king of the Netherlands Willem-Alexander.
