The Trigrad gorge is 7 km long canyon, emerging from erosive effects of the river Rigrodsky within a few million years in the marble rocks of the Rhodope mountains, on the North from the village of Trigrad. The gorge declared a protected area by order dated December 1963.
The distance between the rocks sometimes up to 300 meters. Although in the middle part, the length of which 2-3 km, the width of the gorge is less than 100 m. In the West the height of the cliffs up to 180 m, and in the East reaches 300-350 m. For really large this natural phenomenon is in third place in Bulgaria from all the canyons. Along the river is narrow, which is typical for this area, the road to Trigrad, sometimes carved into the rocks. Motion carried in both directions, so motorists should be respectful to each other and to be patient: often we need to wait for the appearance of oncoming cars at one of the turns. The road, winding along the river, and the cliffs that hang from two sides, creates an impression that the area is inaccessible and removed from the world. In addition, the rock formations resemble ancient city walls, which are the custodians of many mountain mysteries. Beautiful local landscape and slightly seeping sunlight has an amazing impact, which also complemented by the beauty of the Rhodope nature.
River Rigrodsky suddenly "disappears" at the entrance to the cave called the Devil's throat and appears again below, in another cave. The cave "Devil's throat" is open to visitors and is considered one of the most impressive well-appointed caves. There is a huge waterfall, with a height of 42 m, it is formed by the waters of the river. In addition, in this area there are many small caves. For example, Aramiska cave is an interesting place available to visitors. It is located among the rocks in front of the cave "Devil's throat". In it were found the remains of dwellings of the Neolithic period. To visit this cave, you need special equipment, and without a guide it can not. Nearby is the beautiful Yagodinska cave.
Tourists, following the road through the canyon, you find yourself in the village of Trigrad. The locals are incredibly hospitable and are able to offer accommodation, and opportunities to do different kinds of tourism.
