Elbląg canal is a navigable canal near the city of elbląg connecting lake cities ostróda and iława with the Vistula lagoon. Elbląg canal is the longest in Poland, its length is 84, 2 km Canal is located within the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. In January 2011 the President of Poland declared the canal a historical monument, and in 2007 he was recognized as one of the seven Polish miracles.

The most amazing part of the channel is a stretch of 9, 6 km with a height difference of more than 100 meters. Here are five special lifts that transport the court on the ground. The channel is capable of passing vessels of up to 50 tons.

The construction project of a ship canal was created in 1825 engineer from Prussia Jakub Science. Eminent engineer, who worked at the court of Frederick I and Frederick II, has found a way to solve the problem of strong elevation in the channel. Coined project Elbląg canal was to connect East Prussia to the Baltic sea for trade and economic purposes.

Science could not get funding for about 20 years. Implementation began only in 1848. In the first phase of work was carried out with the lakes, where they built sluices and embankments in order to lower the water level. The works were carried out painstaking, requiring time and perseverance. Elbląg canal was completed in 1860. Canal construction cost 10% more expensive construction of the Eiffel tower in Paris. The project was estimated at 77 tons of gold.

During the Second world war, the canal was destroyed, but two years after the end of hostilities, there was again opened shipping. Currently elbląg channel is used only for tourism purposes.
