A Shinto Shrine Dazaifu Tenmangu was built over the grave of the poet, scientist and politician Sugawara Michizane, who lived in the Heian period, and after the death of the deified and worshipped as Tenjin - the patron Saint of education.
The territory of the sanctuary covers more than 12 square miles and includes several buildings. The main Shrine hall was built in 905 year, two years after the death of Michizane. Many objects appeared in 919 year at the initiative of members of the Fujiwara clan, but were destroyed by fire during the civil war. Many buildings that visitors see today shrines that date back to the year 1591, and are an important cultural property of Japan. In the temple complex also includes two ponds, a bridge and the Treasury. It stores various artifacts, including documents Dating from the periods of the Heian and Edo and historical significance for the Shrine and Kyushu.
In the sanctuary, there are about 6 thousand plum trees. This is a favorite tree Michizane, 24 and 25 February, there is a festival dedicated to the plum blossom.

Sugawara Michizane lived with 845 on 903 year. He was born in a family of scientists-Confucianism and received an excellent education. His political career, Michizane began at the court of Emperor UDA, and then supported his son, who appointed Michizane second Minister. Two years later the scientist was exiled to the island of Kyushu in the province Dazaifu as interim Manager. At the beginning of the Meiji period, when the state pursued a policy of separation of Buddhism and Shinto, the temple became known as the Dazaifu Shrine, and after the Second World war has been called Dazaifu Shrine and became one of the main temples of worship Tenjin.
After the death of Michizane his attackers caught up with many disasters: fires, death, drought, disease, earthquakes. Trying to appease the spirit of Michizane, he was posthumously promoted and constructed at Kitano, on the outskirts of Kyoto sanctuary in his honor.
