Sokolski monastery of the Dormition of the virgin is situated along the river Yantra. 12 kilometres away is the town of Gabrovo. From the estate of ether, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the monastery, here marked track leads.
In 1833, Archimandrite Joseph Sokolsky, future first Abbot of the monastery, returned to Gabrovo together with hieromonk Agapie. They chose to create a new monastery rocky terrace right outside Sokolova cave. In rocky limestone rock was carved the first building of the cloister. The first Church was built of wood. Next erected a small wooden building for the accommodation of servants. The Church was consecrated in 1834 by Hilary Cretan. The compound was built on donations of Gabrovo citizens and residents of the surrounding villages.
The building of the Church in the form in which it came to our days, was built in 1834. Finish, internal and external, performed by the priest Paul and his son Nicholas. Their work continued for several decades and was completed in 1862. Master travinsky school of painting painted the iconostasis. The Church houses several valuable icons, one of them works Hristo Coceva – famous image of the virgin and child, which is considered miraculous. In 1968, the monastery was opened as a chapel, in which are icons of the famous painter of Zechariah Zograf. In the courtyard of the monastery is the fountain – a fountain with drinking water – authorship known architect Kolyo Ficheto. The scoop from this fountain was created in the middle ages.
Sokolski monastery was a major educational and spiritual center. Here, in the religious school, which opened in 1836, worked Neofit Bozveli, the famous writer. Also the role of the monastery and in the national liberation movement: in 1865 in the monastery stood a detachment of captain Dyado Nikola, it was here in 1876 began Gabrovski the rebellion under control Tsanko Dustabanov. During the war between the Ottoman and Russian empires for the liberation of Bulgaria in the walls of the Holy monastery was built a hospital.
