Alvsborgs the bridge was inaugurated on 8 November 1966 the Minister of transport of Sweden, Olof Palme.

In the local press was at first feared that the Swedish name "Alvsborgs bridge" will be difficult to be pronounced, so there have been proposals to rename it to "West bridge". However, during the voting the majority of votes were cast for the original Swedish version of the name.
