The Cathedral of Gothenburg Photo: Cathedral of Gothenburg

The Cathedral of Gothenburg is the main Church city diocese. First, in Central Gothenburg was a temporary wooden chapel, which was the first Church in the city. She stood for about 12 years until it was demolished in 1633, to make room for construction of a new Cathedral. To raise funds for the construction of the king even set a special tax in 1627. The wooden Church was demolished, but the tower was used as a guard even more than nine years.

April 15, 1721 in town there was a fire, which has burned more than 200 buildings, including the new Cathedral. Since the walls of the Church still remains, the building has been restored by 1722, however, the tower, the altar and the crypt were finished much later.

The second Cathedral suffered the same fate as the first - it burned down on 20 December 1802 together with 179 houses in the area. This time the fire severely damaged the building, and that speech could not go. In 1804 began the construction of a new Cathedral, a building that has been preserved to our days.

The new Cathedral was built by architect Karl Wilhelm Carlberg (his student finished building after his death in 1814) and was consecrated Bishop on the feast of the Holy Trinity, may 21, 1815. However, the Church was not completed because the tower was not yet built at the time. The second opening of the Church took place on 9 September 1827.

The current Cathedral was built in the classical style and has a smaller size than either of its predecessor. In the interior of the temple has elements of different styles, mainly classical and Empire style.
