The old castle in Grodno is a medieval fortification, built in the XI century at the confluence of the river Gorodnichenko in Neman.
The unusual triangular shape of the fortress walls of the castle is connected with the fact that this narrow wedge of land formed between the two rivers. The wall, which was surrounded by a castle, have a length of 300 meters and a thickness of about 3 meters. In the early years of the castle, the top of its walls were decorated with teeth. The walls are built from glacial boulders and brick, on the outside they are still backed by powerful buttresses. From Grodno castle separates the deep ravine, through which a bridge. Now this bridge has lost its defensive significance and connects the Old and New castles.
Built these fortifications, the head of the Grand Duchy of Lithuanian Prince Vitovt. His fearsome visage of wood can see visitors of the Old castle at the entrance gate. Duke Vytautas replaced the old wooden walls to stone and ordered to build five defensive towers.

Therefore, the Old castle was rebuilt many times, destroyed and built again. Sorry, getting old even strength. During the Northern war of the eighteenth century the Old castle was burnt by the Swedes and never knew the former glory and power.
