Vygozero Photo: The Vyg

Vygozero or Vygozero reservoir is the largest freshwater lake in the Karelian Republic after the Onega and Ladoga lakes. On the map Vygozero can be seen as blue spots with a rugged coastline, which forms numerous bays and capes. The lake area at the moment is 1159 sq km, but before the creation of the reservoir occupied territory was smaller by almost two times.

The increase in the size of the lake was reached with the construction of the Belomorsko-Baltic channel, whereby the water level in the reservoir rose to 7 m, which resulted in the flooding of coastal areas, while greatly changing the hydrological regime of the lake. With flooded areas received a huge amount of mineral and organic substances: surfaced bogs, grassy and woody debris, eroded soil. Have been moved to the areas of fisheries, has changed the habitat of many animals and birds that inhabited coastal areas. The Vyg is elongated in the direction from Northwest to Southeast and is divided into large bays and separate sections.

Deep Vygozero reservoir will not name, because the average depth is 6, 2 m; maximum is 24 m. the lake falls several major tributaries – Voima, Top t, Onda, Segezha; which flows out of lake Vyg river of the North. In addition, throughout the lake scattered a considerable number of Islands. It used to be that on the lake about so many Islands, and how many days a year" – 529, but actually the number of Islands - 259, and they occupy an area of 126 square kilometers the Largest number occurs in the Northern part of the reservoir.

With regard to coastal areas, for the most part is rocky and rocky-sandy shores. More elevated North shore areas of lake Vygozero, but in the southern regions dominated by low banks. On the coast there are places almost completely waterlogged, but mostly the coastal area is covered by forest.

Due to the fact that the Vyg is a shallow reservoir, it in the fall, you can observe rapid cooling of the water, and in the summer the lake water warms up quickly especially. Naturally, in the southern part of lake Vygozero all the processes are more intense. The autopsy of the lake is in mid-may, but the freezing occurs quite a long time – almost the whole of November.

The water reservoir is a lot of content of humic substances; the Northern part of lake Vygozero exposed to waste the pulp and paper factory.

In Vygozero reservoir there are 11 species of fish: whitefish, salmon, vendace, pike, perch, bream, pike, roach, ruffe, burbot and IDE. There are several species of perch: slow growing, small and large, who lives in the deep parts of the lake. Places particularly mass concentrations of major species of bass are located in the South-Western area, near the island of Sigowet, in the lips Turkova, Puke and Monotube. The spawning season occurs on the Lud. In the lake you can find instances that weight reach 600 gr. The lake is especially a lot of bass. Roach is more common in the South-Western area, as well as island and southern areas of the lake. In the lake there are two groups of whitefish, represented by lacustrine and riverine representatives. Special popularity has Warminski whitefish that to 10 years of life reaches a weight of 1 kg.

As already noted, on the shore of lake Vygozero acts Segezha pulp and paper mill, which greatly affects the quality and purity of water, and therefore on fish. All the number of fish that were caught in the nearby vicinity of the city of Segei, has a strong peculiar smell. As the distance from the town, at a distance of 4-5 km from it, the smell fades, but the flesh of the fish becomes ready for consumption. During the flooding of lake water has absorbed an incredible amount of surrounding forests. It is in this part of snags found a wide variety of fish, to which, primarily, is part of the perch. Summer rich reservoir burbot, bream, vendace, roach and perch and pike.
