In the vicinity of the modern Greek city of Eleusis lie the ruins of the homonymous ancient Greek settlement, which was one of the largest religious centers of the Ancient world and went down in history as the place where was held the famous Eleusinian mysteries.
Today the ruins of the ancient Elefsina are important historical and archaeological monument. Here you will find many Archaeological Museum, whose collection represents a large portion of unique ancient artifacts found during excavations.
Archaeological excavations of the ancient Elefsina began in 1882. Because the initial results were quite promising, soon the decision was made on the construction at the site of a special building for the Archaeological Museum. The construction of the Museum began in 1889.
Archaeological Museum collection is extensive and diverse and covers a huge time period, from the 20th century B. C. until the early Christian period. In the Museum you can see the magnificent collection of ceramics, sculpture, architectural fragments, metal products, inscriptions, reliefs, etc. a Significant part of the exposure is directly related to the Eleusinian mysteries.
Two of the most valuable exhibits found during excavations is a huge relief (altitude about 2, 2m), Dating from the 5th century BC with the image of Demeter, Persephone and king of Elefsina Triptolemus, and a clay tablet (circa 370 BC) with fragments of the Eleusinian mysteries. Today, these unique artifacts are kept in the Archaeological Museum of Athens, and in the Eleusinian Museum presents copies.
Among the most interesting and valuable artifacts presented in the Museum, you can celebrate the famous Eleusinian amphora (7th century BC), depicting scenes where Odysseus blinded the Cyclops Polyphemus, and Perseus beheaded Medusa Gorgon and sculpture from the pediment of the Eleusinian sanctuary (490-480 BC) the so-called "flying Crust". Not less interesting is the marble sarcophagus of the Roman period depicting scenes of hunting on kalidonskogo boar (2nd century BC), a headless statue of Demeter (5th century BC) and Asclepius (4th century BC) and the amphora with the black-figure vase painting (520 BC). Also pay attention to the Caryatid (1st century BC) with the propylaeum Small and two plaster models, which give an idea of how it looked ancient sanctuary in the 6th century BC and during the Roman period.
