The Imaret Mosque Photo: The Mosque Imaret

The Imaret mosque is a historical monument of the Ottoman period in Bulgaria, and also the current Muslim prayer facility is located in the city of Plovdiv. Is the second largest mosque in the city (after the Dzhumaya mosque) and one of the fifty Muslim temples built in the city during the rule of the Turks.

The mosque was erected in 1444-1445, on the left Bank of the Maritsa river (the legend in place of the Orthodox Church). Later the building was added to the unusual minaret with moulded brickwork. The mosque was named after a nearby shelter for travelers ("imaret" is translated as "shelter for the homeless"), which in the nineteenth century was destroyed. The temple is built in traditional Islamic style is octagonal domed building. Before inside, the walls were decorated with frescoes of the XVII century, but, unfortunately, today they are only partially preserved.

It is worth mentioning that since the Imaret mosque is a functioning temple, according to Muslim tradition, the entrance to it is possible only at observance of certain rules: in the prayer hall is permissible to enter only without shoes, and women visitors should be body covering clothes and a handkerchief on his head.
