Chalkidiki 24 km from Polygyros town lie the ruins of Ancient Olynthos – one of the most famous and influential policies of Ancient Greece.
A small settlement existed here as early as in the Neolithic period, but eventually it was abandoned. Ancient Olynthos was founded in the 7th century BC In a short time the city was occupied by the Thracian captivity Botany. In 479 BC, Olynthos was captured and destroyed the troops of the Persian king Xerxes led by commander Antabuse I. After the retreat of the Persians, the city was virtually rebuilt on the principle of so-called "Gippodamovoy system" where the streets crossed each other perpendicularly, thereby forming equal rectangular blocks.
Their political weight and the enormous influence of Ancient Olynthos acquired, becoming the head of Chalcis Union, and in the Peloponnesian war took the side of Sparta. Subsequently, under the control of Olynthos and got some city in Eastern Macedonia, and later the capital of the Macedonian Kingdom – Pella. The rapid growth of Chalcis Union and his power became unprofitable Sparta, resulting in 382 BC, began a protracted three-year war. In 379 BC, Chalcis, the Union was dissolved, but only formally. The next few decades Olynthos remained the most powerful city of Chalkidiki. Complex political games between Athens, Chalcis Union and Macedonia led to a new war, and 348 in the year Olynthos was captured by the Macedonian king Philip II and completely destroyed. Chalcis Union ceased to exist, and Ancient Olynthos never recovered.
To our days perfectly preserved ruins of numerous buildings of the ancient city as the archaic and classical periods, as well as traces of Neolithic settlement. Of particular interest is the unique floor mosaics river pebble, has high artistic value.
In the archaeological Park is open Archaeological Museum of Olynthos. The exposition of the Museum is a superb collection of audiovisual materials, which will introduce you to the Ancient Liposom and will talk in detail about the course of archaeological excavations. Ancient artifacts found during the excavations can be seen in the Archaeological Museum of Polygyros.
Today, the Ancient Olynthos is one of the most important archaeological sites of Greece.
