First, in 1627, the services were held in a small chapel near the sea. The Church and its first pastor Paul Andreas Lempelius were described in the work of the Finnish writer Aino Kallas in the story "the Pastor of Reigi".

Later, in 1690, to replace the chapel was built a wooden Church. However, and this building by the end of the 18th century fell into disrepair. At this time came to the aid of the Earl of Ungern-Sternberg.

The existing stone Church, designed for 370 places, was built in 1800-1802 gg at the direction of count Otto Reinhold Ludwig von Ungern-Sternberg. Earl was the owner of the manor Kuressaare and other lands on the island of Hiiumaa. He was also known under the names Randroovel ("coastal thief") and as a graph Ungru manor. The Church was built in memory of his son Gustav Otto Dietrich von Ungern-Sternberg. The Earl's son committed suicide because he was a player and ears in debt.

The spire of the Church is decorated with lilies – the symbol of the family Ungern.

In Reigi Church houses many beautiful works of art, many of which are believed to have donated as a thank you managed to survive the shipwreck near the threat the North-West coast of the island of Hiiumaa.

Some repairs in the Church were made in 1899, however, mainly the Church looks like it did 200 years ago.

This site has attracted many composers, writers and filmmakers Estonia. Based on the story of Aino Kallas in the story "the Pastor of Reigi" in the 1977 film about how in the beginning of XVII century the family of pastor Lempelius emerging drama, arrives in exile on the island, in the parish of Reigi.
