Ambras castle on the South-Eastern outskirts of Innsbruck was once a symbol of the Tyrolean fame and power. In the XII century there lived counts of Andechs. The current building was built in 1563-1595 gg by order of Archduke Ferdinand II. The Archduke was secretly married to the beautiful Filipinas Welser and was going to lead a family life in this castle.

The castle consists of the lower fortress with entrance gates and a spacious courtyard, and the top of the Palace, built on the site of an ancient building. Both parts of the lock are joined Spanish hall, built by Giovanni Luchese in 1571, with original coffered ceilings, wall frescoes depicting Tyrolean princes in full height doors and mosaic.

Archduke Ferdinand II in Ambrose founded his own Museum, but the exhibits soon went on the Vienna museums. Preserved Armory Museum, the Kunstkamera Museum and the gallery of portraits of members of the house of Habsburg painted by renowned artists including Lucas Cranach, Peter Paul Rubens and Diego velázquez.
