On the banks of the Amazon, near the Peruvian city of Iquitos, Paradise is a place called Monkey island Is a place where 8 out of 51 living in Peru Primate species found shelter and care, while remaining free to live in the dense jungle of the Amazon.
The island area of about 250 ha, that is embodied in the family life project, in August 1997, found protection and habitat of such endangered species of Primate, the spider monkey, Howler monkey, pot-bellied monkey, borogravia Tamarin and others.
On the island Monkeys grow papayas, banana and cocoa, which provide the necessary sustenance primates. Most came to the island via a shelter for monkeys and "donations" from citizens who find orphans primates, abandoned in the cities or markets. In fifteen years of existence of the island workers rescue center are constantly planting young seedlings of local fruit plants, and controlling weeds and poaching. Daily contact between "guardians" and monkeys creates a special relationship that doesn't prevent them to retain the instincts and provide an opportunity to adapt to an independent life in their natural habitat. Thanks to the work done, the number of individuals of each species of primates living on the island, rose significantly over the year, added eight to twelve individuals.
Monkeys living freely on the island, very social, and often come into contact with tourists, sometimes you can "enjoy" a slice of juicy papaya or cocoa beans.
