The Church of the Icon of the Mother of God of Kazan Handicraft settlement is an active Orthodox Church, located in Your suburb. The initiator of the founding of the temple in the craftsmen settlement made honorary citizen of Irkutsk, gold and Explorer of the North and Siberia, philanthropist A. M. Sibiryakov. For the erection of the Church was created by the special Building Committee, headed by A. M. personally Siberians.
In the summer of 1885 the Archbishop Veniamin blessed the cornerstone of the Church construction. It was originally planned to build the temple as St. Nicholas, but was consecrated as Kazan. The Church in the craftsmen settlement built in Russian-Byzantine eclectic architectural style. Nine of its bells were cast in Yaroslavl. The Royal gates of the iconostasis were ornate gilded carvings. The main iconostasis was carved silvered image of St. Luke. To 1892 was finished trim works and decoration of the Church.
In April, 1892, his grace Bishop Makarios consecrated the temple. Right altar was consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas.
After the revolution, the Church remained active for another 18 years. In 1936, however, the Church suffered the same fate as all Russian churches - it was closed. Since 1936, the Church was used as a warehouse, base knightage and factory "Siberian souvenir". In the temple building appeared capital partitions, intermediate floors and lots of bulkheads.
And only in October 1988 by the decision of local authorities began work to restore the Church. This project was designed by a leading architect of Irkutsk restoration workshops L. Gurova. In October 1990, the continued recovery of the small enterprise "Vozrozhdeniye". Restoration of the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God of Kazan were voluntary donations of local residents and organizations.
Today the virgin-Kazan Church – a monument of architecture, which is one of the iconic sights of Irkutsk.
